Tinubu Rejects N942bn Census Budget

Tinubu Rejects N942bn Census Budget | Daily Report Nigeria

  • President Bola Tinubu has rejected a N942bn proposal by the National Population Commission for the conduct of the national housing and population census.

  •  Tinubu suggested the deployment of National Youth Service Corps members to cut personnel costs and proposed a committee to review the census budget.

  •  The President emphasized the importance of accurate census data for planning and resource distribution.

President Bola Tinubu has turned down a N942bn proposal by the National Population Commission (NPC) for the conduct of the national housing and population census.

According to sources, the President insisted on cost-cutting measures during a meeting with NPC officials on February 24, 2025.

As reported by PUNCH, Tinubu suggested the deployment of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to cut personnel costs.

A government official revealed that the President felt the proposed budget was too high, saying “The main issue from that meeting was that the money they were proposing was quite much. It is around N942bn. That is almost N1tn. And the President felt that it was too much.”

Tinubu emphasized the importance of accurate census data for planning and resource distribution.

“We must ascertain who we are, how many we are, and how to manage our data. Without an accurate census, we can’t successfully plan for employment, agriculture, and food sovereignty,” he said.

The President also noted that government incentives, such as the sale and distribution of fertilizers, could be improved with more reliable data and demographics.

Tinubu Signs ₦54.99trn 2025 Budget into Law

President Bola Tinubu has signed the 2025 Appropriation Bill of ₦54.99 trillion into law. The signing ceremony took place on Friday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in the presence of the leadership of the National Assembly and other senior government officials.

The 2025 budget, which was passed by both chambers of the National Assembly on February 13, represents a 99.96% increase from the 2024 budget of ₦27.5 trillion.
