Girl, 17, Drowns While Fetching Water From River In Niger

  • A girl has passed away, after drowning in a river.

  • The girl was said to have passed after attempting to fetch water at a community river.

  • It reportedly took almost an hour of searching before the body was recovered.

A tragic demise of a minor has left community members mourning in Nigeria state.

The deceased, identified Elizabeth, a 17-year-old girl was said to have gone to the river to fetch water for domestic use, in Koropka, a suburb of Minna, the Niger State capital.

According to a resident, Zakari Lambata, who confirmed the incident, Elizabeth, her sister and some other residents had gone to the river to fetch water when the incident happened.

“The elder sister of the girl ran to me to help search and rescue her drowning sister. It took almost an hour of searching before the body was recovered by some youth in the area. This is an urgent call to the government and the company to find a way of restoring water supply to the people, so as to avoid more casualties. As the river chanchaga is the major source of water to the people since the water supply from the water board is cut off,” he said

More confirmation from the Leadership revealed that the community had been without a proper pipe born water for a long time, due to the construction works going on in the community.

Consequently, the residents of the community depend on the river for water.
