Group says El-Rufai is “unfit and morally unqualified”.
Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has sparked significant controversy within his new political affiliation.
Daily Report Nigeria gathered that a Coalition of SDP Youths and Supporters has openly rejected El-Rufai’s membership, labeling him “unfit and morally unqualified” due to his alleged anti-democratic record during his tenure as governor.
This was made known in a statement on Friday by Comrade Abdulsamad Bello, the president of the coalition, who expressed concerns that El-Rufai’s defection is an attempt to hijack the party for personal political gain.

Bello who was displeased with the party’s decision to accept El- Rufia stated, “We reject El-Rufai’s entrance into our party in its entirety. He has come not as a reformer but as an undertaker, seeking to bury the SDP before it even has the chance to grow.”
He also criticized the party’s leadership for what he described as a “clandestine deal” that facilitated the former governor’s defection to the party, warning that his presence could destabilize the party.
The coalition further accused El-Rufai of suppressing opposition voices and sidelining party members during his time as governor, citing them as actions that are contrary to the SDP’s democratic values.
Recall that tensions escalated in SDP when El-Rufai’s supporters staged a demonstration at the SDP national headquarters in Abuja, demanding the resignation of the party’s national secretary, Olu Agunloye.
The youth coalition interpreted this as evidence of his attempt to seize control of the party’s leadership. A nature of his authoritarian leadership style.

However, El-Rufai has stated that his defection to SDP decamping from the APC, was a result of the party leadership’s failure to address internal challenges.

Recall that he stated that President Tinubu rejected him as a minister in his government after convincing him to join APC when he wanted to take a break from politics.
This failure to keep to the agreement by the President pushed the former governor to decamp from APC.
But other socialites like Reno Omkri have other opinions on the issue. Reno argued that El-Rufia didn’t pass the criteria stipulated for ministers as he was not cleared by the committee.
