China’s national football team has recently made a significant addition to its roster by naturalizing Brazilian-born midfielder Serginho. This strategic move aims to bolster the team’s performance in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Serginho’s Journey to Chinese Citizenship

Serginho, who has been playing in China since 2020, officially obtained Chinese citizenship on March 12, 2025.

Shortly after, he made his debut for the national team in a closed-door friendly against Kuwait, contributing to a 3-1 victory.

His naturalization reflects China’s ongoing efforts to enhance its football prowess by integrating talented foreign-born players.

Strategic Inclusion of Naturalized Players

In addition to Serginho, the 27-man squad announced by head coach Branko Ivankovic includes Liverpool-born defender Tyias Browning, now known as Jiang Guangtai.

This approach of incorporating naturalized players underscores China’s commitment to elevating its international football standing.

However, notable absences in the current lineup include previous regulars such as Elkeson, Alan, and Fernandinho, indicating a shift in selection strategy.

Upcoming Challenges in World Cup Qualifiers

China is set to face Saudi Arabia on Thursday and Australia the following Tuesday in critical World Cup qualifying matches.

Currently positioned at the bottom of their group with six points, China is level with Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, trailing only on goal difference.

Australia sits just one point ahead, while Japan leads the group with 16 points.

The top two teams will secure automatic qualification for the World Cup, while the third and fourth-placed teams will enter additional qualifying rounds.

Conclusion

The integration of Serginho into China’s national team symbolizes a strategic effort to enhance performance in the World Cup qualifiers.

As the team prepares for these pivotal matches, the contributions of naturalized players like Serginho could play a crucial role in shaping China’s football future.
