Wike Revokes 4,794 Land Titles Over Non-Payment of Ground Rent in FCT

  • FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has revoked 4,794 land titles due to non-payment of Ground Rent for over 40 years.

  • The affected properties are located in the Central Area, Garki I and II, Wuse I and II, Asokoro, Maitama, and Guzape districts.

  • The FCT Administration had given the defaulters a 21-day grace period to pay their outstanding bills before the revocation.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has approved the revocation of 4,794 land titles due to non-payment of Ground Rent for over 40 years.

This decision was made public during a press briefing by the Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, and the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Director of Lands, Chijioke Nwankwoeze.

According to Olayinka, the affected properties are located in the Central Area, Garki I and II, Wuse I and II, Asokoro, Maitama, and Guzape districts.

He stated that the FCTA had given the defaulters a 21-day grace period to pay their outstanding bills before the revocation.

Olayinka noted that the FCTA made numerous publications in national newspapers and announcements on broadcast media since 2023, calling on defaulters to pay up all outstanding bills and ground rents.

Nwankwoeze revealed that as of the end of 2024, a total of N6,967,980,119 was owed as Ground Rent by 8,375 property owners.

He stated that 4,794 land titles were in default of Ground rent payment for 10 years and above, contravening the terms and conditions of the grant of the Rights of Occupancy, in line with the provisions of Section 28, Subsections 5(a) and (b) of the Land Use Act.

The FCTA has given the affected property owners a 21-day grace period to pay their outstanding bills before the revocation takes effect.

The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has expressed gratitude to the Ijaw people for avoiding a crisis allegedly orchestrated by former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and his federal allies.

According to INC President Prof. Benjamin Okaba, the plan aimed to plunge Ijaw communities into a crisis that could justify emergency rule in Rivers State.
