In a remarkable turn of events, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Sports, Kirsty Coventry has been elected as the first female and African president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The 41-year-old former swimmer from Zimbabwe achieved an outright majority in the first round of voting, outpacing six other candidates, including the expected frontrunner, Lord Sebastian Coe.
Coventry is set to begin her eight-year term on June 23, 2025, taking over from Thomas Bach.
