FG launches BisonFly Project to cut costs on MDAs’ official air travels

Initiative could save between N18bn and N24bn annually through discounted fares

Project will enhance accountability, transparency, and fiscal reforms
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to cutting the high cost of official air travels across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) through the full implementation of the BisonFly Project, a cost-optimisation scheme introduced by the Ministry of Finance.
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, gave the charge on Wednesday in Abuja during a stakeholders’ meeting. He was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Special Duties, Mr. Raymond Omenka Omachi.
Edun stressed the urgency of the project, noting its potential to save the government between N18 billion and N24 billion annually by securing discounted airfares. He explained that the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda and ongoing fiscal reforms designed to reduce overheads.
“Project BisonFly directly supports our commitment to prudent financial management. By coordinating travel and securing discounted rates, we are using the government’s collective bargaining power to cut expenditure and improve service delivery, just as global institutions like the World Bank have done successfully,” he said.
The project is designed as a technology-driven initiative to streamline official travel through a centralised booking platform for MDAs. This is expected to boost transparency, accountability, and efficiency in government expenditure.
According to the Ministry, adopting global best practices in travel management will free up resources for national development, improve productivity within the public service, and promote accountability.
Beyond savings, the BisonFly Project is projected to support job creation in the aviation and ICT sectors while strengthening public confidence in Nigeria’s fiscal management framework.
The Ministry further assured that all relevant stakeholders will be fully involved to guarantee the sustainability and long-term benefits of the initiative.
