The arrests were said to have been made by the Commission’s Port Harcourt office.
Tensions are rising in Delta State as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly arrested the Acting Accountant General of the state, Vincent Okubor, and his Deputy in connection with an alleged N1.3 trillion fraud during the administration of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.
According to sources, the arrest took place in March through the EFCC’s Port Harcourt office, as part of an ongoing investigation into large-scale financial irregularities, including questionable contracts and unaccounted funds reportedly meant for oil-producing communities.
A top government insider confirmed that the officials were invited for questioning and are currently assisting with investigations.

While the identity of the Deputy was not confirmed, multiple sources say the probe was triggered by a petition from late elder statesman Pa Edwin Clark and others.
Reacting to the reports, the State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, denied the arrests. “The man is attending FAAC in Abuja. He was at FAAC yesterday. I spoke with him. He is the one that even released funds to us. So when did they arrest him?” Aniagwu said, dismissing the news as false.

The EFCC, however, confirmed that the investigation is still active. When contacted, EFCC spokesperson Mr. Dele Oyewale said: “We are still investigating, that is the update.” On the reported arrests, he said, “Let me find out about that,” but failed to respond to follow-up calls and messages.
This case has sparked renewed public concern about corruption and mismanagement in government. Civil society groups and anti-corruption advocates have applauded the EFCC for acting on the petitions, urging full transparency in the probe.
Meanwhile, political observers warn the scandal could have serious implications for Delta’s political landscape, particularly for key PDP figures with future ambitions.
