“Everyone at Celtic Football Club is deeply saddened at the news that legendary Lisbon Lion, John Clark has passed away at the age of 84.”
After making his debut for the managing team in 1959, Clark went on to feature in over 300 matches across 13 years.
Further, he helped the Hoops in winning three Scottish Cups, four League Cups, and four Scottish League titles.
This was the defining moment in his career-the wins in Lisbon on behalf of Celtic, where British clubs were outraged at Inter Milan for being the first in Europe to win the trophy.
Calm defending saw him being called “The Brush” because he would always sweep away danger in the backline.
Stepping off the pitch did not end Clark’s Celtic journey.
Rather, he spent the next forty years working for the team as coach, assistant manager and kit man.
He therefore connected today’s team to the original Lisbon Lions and carried the club’s spirit into each new era.
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers paid tribute by saying,
“Greatness is a word people throw around, but for John Clark, it is a very fitting tribute. John was instrumental in delivering our greatest day ever and his achievement is forever etched in Celtic’s proud history.”
