The Anambra State Government has announced sweeping measures aimed at cutting financial burdens on parents and restoring sanity to school operations across the state.

Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, on Friday declared that pupils would no longer be allowed to write assignments directly inside textbooks. She explained that the practice had rendered books unusable for younger siblings, forcing families to make repeated purchases.

The Commissioner, addressing private school owners and teachers at a workshop in Awka, said the directive forms part of wider reforms to ensure education delivery reflects equity, inclusion, and sustainability. She emphasised that parents, school administrators, and teachers must enforce compliance, while the Ministry stands ready to sanction offenders.

Prof. Chuma-Udeh also outlawed extravagant graduation parties in nursery and primary schools, describing the events as unnecessary, exploitative, and financially draining. She warned that schools found organising such ceremonies under any guise would face government action.

She stressed that teaching and school management must not be converted into platforms for financial exploitation but treated as a sacred responsibility to the next generation.
