  • Supreme Court ruling, impeachment threat triggered state of emergency

  • Wike, Fubara, lawmakers now pledge joint cooperation

Peace has reportedly returned to Rivers State following a late-night reconciliation meeting hosted by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The meeting brought together Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Hon. Nyesom Wike, suspended Governor Hon. Siminalayi Fubara, and aggrieved members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The lingering political crisis, which escalated into open hostilities over the control of the state’s political machinery, had earlier resulted in a state of emergency declared in March 2025. The President had suspended the governor, his deputy Mrs Ngozi Odu, and the entire House of Assembly, appointing Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as Administrator to restore calm.

Tensions worsened after the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the lawmakers, prompting fresh threats of impeachment and deepening the rift between the Wike and Fubara factions.

However, following intense presidential mediation, both sides announced they had reached a mutual understanding and pledged to work in unity for the stability of Rivers State.

Speaking after the meeting, Wike said the disagreement had ended and all political actors had agreed to support the governor.

Fubara also confirmed the truce, saying the peace deal would be upheld in the interest of progress and development in the state.
