The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has strongly criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for embarking on a Caribbean vacation at a time of worsening insecurity, hunger, and hardship in Nigeria.

In a statement posted via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, Obi labelled Tinubu’s trip to Saint Lucia for official and personal engagements as “insensitive” and “misplaced,” urging the President to prioritise the dire situation at home.

Titled “No, Mr President, This Is Not the Time for Holidaying”, Obi’s statement highlighted recent tragedies, including over 200 deaths in Minna, Niger State due to floods and ongoing violence in Benue State, where Tinubu’s visit was turned into what he described as a political parade.

“This is a President going for leisure when he couldn’t visit Minna, Niger State, where over two hundred lives were lost,” Obi wrote.

Obi compared the President’s holiday destination, Saint Lucia, to Nigerian cities in both size and population, suggesting Tinubu was prioritising comfort over duty.

“Makurdi is 59% bigger than Saint Lucia. Minna is over ten times its size. Yet he chooses leisure over compassion,” Obi added.

He warned that such tone-deaf leadership only deepens public disillusionment, especially as citizens struggle to feed, relocate from conflict zones, and survive amid inflation and insecurity.

“What we are seeing is the government’s obsession with the 2027 elections and a disturbing focus on pleasing the wealthy, while the poor continue to suffer,” Obi added.
