  • Five Chinese nationals were convicted by a Federal High Court in Lagos for cyber-terrorism and internet fraud linked to a cryptocurrency and romance scam syndicate.
  • They were among 792 suspects arrested during the EFCC’s “Eagle Flush Operation” in Lagos on December 19, 2024.
  • Each convict received a one-year jail term and a fine of ₦1 million, with the court ordering their deportation to China after completing their sentences.

The Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of five Chinese nationals over cyber-terrorism and internet fraud-related offences.

Justice Dehinde Dipeolu of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, delivered the judgment on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

The convicts — Guo Qiang, Yang Shumei, Guo Zhi Yong, Zhang Gia Feng, and Lu Yi Liang — were found guilty for their involvement in a cryptocurrency investment and romance scam syndicate that formed part of a broader cybercrime operation.

They were among the 792 individuals arrested during the EFCC’s “Eagle Flush Operation,” a major sting conducted in Lagos on December 19, 2024.

Each of the five was arraigned on separate charges linked to unauthorized access to computer systems and attempts to disrupt Nigeria’s economic and social infrastructure. Initially, they pleaded not guilty, but later changed their plea to guilty during Tuesday’s court session.

Following the change in plea, prosecution counsel U.S. Kyari urged the court to convict them, which Justice Dipeolu granted. The judge sentenced each defendant to one year in prison and imposed a fine of N1 million.

In addition to the sentence, the court ordered the Nigeria Immigration Service to oversee their repatriation to China within seven days of completing their prison terms.
