Declares 2027 race will be ADC versus APC after coalition adoption
A lawyer and member of the opposition coalition, Mr Kenneth Okonkwo, on Friday asserted that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has firmly established itself as the nation’s sole opposition party.
Appearing on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Okonkwo dismissed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) as entities that only exist on paper, stressing that their leaders have either aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or moved under the ADC umbrella.
“Strictly speaking, there is no longer any party like the PDP or LP. They are just existing on paper because whoever is in the PDP is either supporting the APC or the ADC. That’s what it is,” he declared.
He pointed to the conduct of Mr Nyesom Wike, who openly pledged support for another party’s presidential candidate while still being a PDP leader, describing the development as the final collapse of the opposition party.
Okonkwo, who previously served as spokesperson for Mr Peter Obi during the 2023 Labour Party presidential campaign, further stressed that the LP lacked the organisational structure to contest in 2027. He maintained that the ADC, in contrast, had consolidated its place as the alternative platform for Nigerians.
He emphasised that the ADC will hold a transparent and competitive presidential primary, with the eventual candidate carrying the backing of the coalition into the 2027 election against President Bola Tinubu.

On 2 July 2025, a wide coalition of political heavyweights, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Mr Obi, former Senate President David Mark, ex-Minister Rauf Aregbesola, ex-Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, officially adopted the ADC as their platform to confront the APC at the polls.
In response, President Bola Tinubu dismissed the coalition, describing its leaders as “political IDPs” during a state visit to Nasarawa on 25 June 2025, and told his supporters not to give them attention.
Despite the President’s taunt, Okonkwo insisted that Nigerians would face a clear choice between the ruling APC and the ADC coalition in 2027.
