Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced the creation of a new political party in the United States, vowing to disrupt what he described as the country’s entrenched “one-party system.”

Musk, who was previously a major donor to President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign, revealed the formation of the America Party in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.

“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk wrote. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

The SpaceX and Tesla CEO’s declaration follows a bitter rift with Trump over a massive domestic spending package. As the former head of the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency, Musk had led efforts to cut federal jobs and spending but clashed with Republican leaders after they supported the $3.4 trillion bill.

In a poll conducted on X on US Independence Day, Musk asked followers if they supported a break from the traditional two-party system. More than 1.2 million people responded, with a 2-to-1 majority backing his call for a new political force.

After Musk labelled the Republicans’ flagship bill “debt slavery,” Trump reportedly threatened to revoke federal contracts from Musk’s businesses and even raised the prospect of deporting the South African-born billionaire.

“We’ll have to take a look,” Trump told reporters when asked if he would act on the threats. Musk became a US citizen in 2002.
