The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh alert warning that 20 states across Nigeria are at risk of flash floods in July as heavy downpours continue nationwide.
In a statement released Monday, NiMet advised residents in the affected areas to adopt precautionary measures to avoid loss of lives and property.
“People should clean gutters, switch off power sources during flooding, prepare emergency supplies, and evacuate danger zones when necessary,” the agency said.

The warning comes amid Nigeria’s peak rainy season, which often leaves many communities vulnerable to flood-related damage and displacement.

The 20 states identified by NiMet include Sokoto, Kaduna, Zamfara, Yobe, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom.
NiMet also urged citizens to take steps that would reduce the likelihood of mudslides in high-risk areas.
The agency stressed that proactive action by individuals and local governments would help mitigate the impact of potential flooding this month.
