The Idoma Area Traditional Council (IATC) has annulled the chieftaincy title recently conferred on President Bola Tinubu and four other dignitaries during the Igede Agba yam festival in Oju Local Government Area of Benue State.

The title, which was accepted on behalf of President Tinubu by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, had been bestowed by the Adiharu of Igede, His Royal Highness CP Oga Ero (retd.), at Saturday’s annual celebration.

However, in a statement on Monday, the IATC, under the leadership of its President and Och’Idoma V, His Royal Majesty Dr Elaigwu Odogbo John, declared the conferments null and void.

The council explained that the action breached its earlier directive suspending all chieftaincy title bestowals across the Idoma nation.

The statement, signed by council secretary Mr Adegbe Uloko and titled “Nullification of Purported Chieftaincy Titles Conferred by the Igede Traditional Council”, maintained that the conferments directly contravened the declaration issued on 2 September 2025.

According to the IATC, the purported conferments of 6 September 2025 carry no legal, customary, or traditional effect, stressing that it remains the only government-recognised traditional authority in the Idoma nation.

The council warned that any actions contrary to its directives amount to a breach of law and urged government institutions, the public, and stakeholders to disregard the titles.

Reaffirming its stance, the IATC said the nullification was necessary to safeguard the integrity of traditional institutions in Benue State and to uphold peace, unity, and due process across the Idoma nation.
