Nigeria’s fragile electricity grid suffered its first collapse of the year on Wednesday, plunging the country into another round of nationwide blackouts.

Data from the Independent System Operator (ISO) revealed that power generation nosedived from 2,917.83 megawatts (MW) to just 1.5 MW between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., effectively shutting down supply.

Confirming the incident, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) posted on its official X (Twitter) account that customers were experiencing outages due to “a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 a.m.”

“Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilised,” AEDC added.

The blackout came despite assurances by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) that no grid collapse had occurred in the first quarter of 2025. In its July 4 report, NERC had urged the system operator to strengthen coordination to avoid system instability.

Nigeria’s power grid has long been plagued by systemic failures. In 2024 alone, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) recorded 11 nationwide collapses, throwing millions of households and businesses into darkness.
