The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially confirmed the detention of Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, following accusations of financial misconduct. The Commission cited his repeated failure to attend multiple invitations for questioning.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the EFCC revealed that Otse was invited for questioning in relation to several petitions it received concerning alleged financial crimes.
The agency emphasized that Otse’s arrest was not a result of public criticism or his remarks about the EFCC but was rather due to his non-compliance with official invitations.

“Martins Otse was invited for questioning due to numerous allegations of financial misconduct raised in various petitions,” the EFCC noted in its statement.
The Commission addressed public speculation, urging Nigerians to refrain from making assumptions and allowing it to carry out its constitutional duties without interference.
“The EFCC should be allowed to perform its responsibilities impartially,” the statement read, adding that “once the investigation is completed, appropriate charges will be filed.”
The EFCC further explained that Otse had repeatedly ignored invitations sent through his known addresses and communication platforms.
“The suspect did not show up despite numerous invitations,” the Commission stated.
While the EFCC acknowledged Otse’s vocal criticism of its operations, it clarified that his arrest was not motivated by those comments.
“Although his remarks are concerning, they did not influence his arrest. The relevant authorities will address them separately,” the Commission added.
The EFCC also clarified that its actions were in line with legal procedures, and a valid remand order was secured to detain Otse as the investigation continues.
“The EFCC is within its legal rights to hold the suspect while the investigation is underway. A proper remand order was obtained,” the Commission explained.
Additionally, the EFCC confirmed that Otse has been granted administrative bail, with his release contingent on meeting the specified conditions.
