The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intercepted fake malaria drugs worth over ₦1.2 billion in Lagos, signalling an intensified campaign against substandard medicines in Nigeria.

Operatives discovered 277 cartons of unregistered Malamal Forte hidden in a warehouse in the Ilasa-Oshodi area.

The drugs were illegally imported from Shanxi Tianyuan Pharmaceuticals Group in China, disguised as spare parts and concealed in cartons labelled Diclofenac Potassium 50mg.

NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, confirmed the seizure, stating: “This seizure is part of NAFDAC’s sustained nationwide operation to protect public health and ensure only safe, quality medicines are available to Nigerians.”

Prof. Adeyeye emphasised that counterfeit medicines pose a major threat to public health and could exacerbate malaria-related deaths.

She assured Nigerians that the agency would intensify surveillance at ports, borders, and markets to clamp down on unscrupulous importers.

The seized drugs are set for destruction following regulatory procedures, with investigations ongoing to trace those responsible.
