  • The Lagos State Safety Commission has sealed Monterosa Construction Company’s Lekki site after crane operator Rotimi Adesina died in a fatal accident on Wednesday.
  • The commission directed the company to submit all documents related to crane operations and site safety, while the HSE officer was unavailable for immediate questioning.
  • The Director General Lanre Mojola emphasised that compromising safety is unacceptable, assuring that strict enforcement of regulations will continue to prevent future tragedies.

The Lagos State Safety Commission has shut down a construction site operated by Monterosa Construction Company in Lekki, following the tragic death of a worker, Rotimi Adesina, who was fatally injured in a crane accident.

PUNCH Metro learnt on Sunday that the incident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday while Adesina, believed to be the crane operator, was on duty at the site. He was immediately rushed to Evercare Hospital in Lekki Phase One but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Confirming the development, the Director General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, said the site had been sealed and an abatement notice issued to prevent further risk as investigations continue.

In a statement made available exclusively to PUNCH Metro and signed by the commission’s spokesperson, Adewunmi Okoh, the agency said, “The Lagos State Safety Commission has sealed the Monterosa Construction Company site following a serious crane incident that occurred at the site involving crane operations at 7:30 am.”

The statement continued, “Preliminary investigation from officials of the commission who promptly arrived at the site reveals that the crane operator, one Mr. Rotimi Adesina, sustained fatal injuries during the incident and was transported to the Evercare Hospital, Lekki Phase 1, where he later died.”

According to the commission, the site’s Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Officer was unavailable for immediate questioning at the time of the incident, as he was assisting the injured worker.

However, the Project Manager, Hein Coerzer, and the Company Secretary, Ndidi Uchechukwu, were engaged by officials and confirmed that all critical documentation related to the crane’s operations was stored at the company’s head office.

The agency stated that Monterosa Construction has been directed to submit all relevant documents pertaining to the crane and general site operations for further review.

Emphasising the importance of preventive measures, Mojola said, “Safety of lives is key, and on no account should safety precautionary measures be compromised.”

He also extended the commission’s sympathies to the bereaved family, assuring the public of the agency’s commitment to enforcing safety standards. “The commission remains committed to preventing the recurrence of such tragic incidents through strict enforcement of safety regulations,” he added.

Adesina’s death marks yet another workplace tragedy in Lagos involving crane operations.

It would be recalled that in October 2024, a similar incident occurred when a worker, Olalekan Oloruntoba, was crushed to death while operating a crane at a Julius Berger construction site in Ijora. That incident also prompted a full investigation by the Lagos State Safety Commission, which later sanctioned the construction firm.

The recent event has once again raised concerns over enforcement of safety protocols at construction sites across the state.
