Dembélé’s triumph is historic for both PSG and French football, as he is only the sixth Frenchman to win the trophy and the first French champion since Karim Benzema.

At the top of the women’s game, Aitana Bonmatí achieved a rare hat-trick by winning the Ballon d’Or Féminin.

Her consistency across club and country again set her apart in the voting and kept Barcelona and Spain strongly represented among the sport’s elite.

There were several notable awards across the night.

Lamine Yamal successfully defended the Kopa Trophy as the best under-21 player, while Vicky López claimed the women’s Kopa.

Viktor Gyökeres shared the Gerd Müller Trophy with Ewa Pajor for their goalscoring exploits, and Gianluigi Donnarumma took the men’s Yashin Trophy.
