The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed suggestions from the Presidency that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has no plan to extend his tenure beyond 2031, insisting that his constitutional mandate ends in 2027.

The party, in a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, warned that Nigerians would not accept Tinubu in office for a day longer than the expiration of his first term.

According to Abdullahi, the hurried defence issued by the Presidency in response to comments by former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, only reinforces public suspicion that the government is “out of touch and dangerously complacent.”

He said, “For the President to already speak of staying in office until 2031 suggests he sees re-election as a formality rather than a constitutional duty to prove his performance. Re-election is not automatic, and President Tinubu has not earned a second term.”

The ADC accused the administration of deepening national divisions in less than two years of governance, warning that Nigerians would demand accountability rather than political entitlement when the 2027 elections approach.
