The Rivers State Police Command has commenced a full investigation into the killing of Julius Okpor, a 300-level student of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, who was allegedly shot by suspected cultists in the Rumuolumeni area of Port Harcourt on Saturday.

In a statement released on Sunday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, described the incident as a “suspected cult-related incident.”

According to the police, Okpor, an indigene of Okposi in Ogba/Egbema Local Government Area, was allegedly attacked and shot by members of a rival cult group around Cecilia Road, Rumuolumeni.

“On Saturday, 20th July 2025, at about 11:30 am, a report was received at the Rumuolumeni Police Station that one Julius Okpor, a 300-level student of Ignatius Ajuru University and an indigene of Okposi in Ogba/Egbema Local Government Area, was allegedly shot by members of a rival cult group,” the statement read in part.

Police operatives were said to have immediately visited the scene and rushed the victim to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), where he was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.

SP Iringe-Koko further disclosed that the state Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has assured the public that security agencies are working tirelessly to apprehend those behind the attack.

The statement also urged members of the public to remain calm and assist the police by providing credible information that could aid in the ongoing investigation.

Adepoju reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling cultism and restoring peace and safety in Rumuolumeni and its environs.

Fire Guts Ibadan Industrial Facility, Destroys Properties Worth Millions of Naira

Properties worth millions of naira were destroyed on Sunday following a fire outbreak at Shril-Balaj Industrial Limited, located in the Olopomeji area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The blaze, which occurred in the early hours of the day, ravaged the recycling section of the facility, where large quantities of disused tyres were stored. The fire was reported to the Oyo State Fire Service at about 7:07 am.
