A man identified as Adeshina Gilbert has been arrested in connection with the brutal mob killing of a Benue commercial driver, Mr. Agege Ternenge, in Obudu, Cross River State.

Gilbert, 35, a resident of Abonkib community in Obudu Urban, was apprehended by operatives of the Cross River State Police Command following an order from the Commissioner of Police, Rashid Afegba. His arrest is part of an ongoing manhunt launched to track down all individuals involved in the July 18 incident.

The suspect is believed to be among those responsible for the gruesome killing of Ternenge, a driver from Mbanyam in Mbatyough Council Ward, Vandeikya Local Government Area of Benue State. Ternenge was reportedly attacked and stoned to death by a mob while delivering a waybill in Obudu.

Confirmation of Gilbert’s arrest came from the Chairman of Vandeikya LGA, Dennis Guda, who commended the swift action of the Cross River State Police Command.

A disturbing video of the lynching, which surfaced on social media, sparked nationwide outrage and condemnation. Speaking on the incident, the spokesperson of the Cross River State Police Command, SP Irene Ugbo, described the act as barbaric and inhumane. She reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring all perpetrators are brought to justice.

Reacting further, Chairman Guda lauded the prompt response by law enforcement and urged continued efforts to apprehend other suspects. He appealed to residents of Vandeikya to remain calm and assured them that justice will be pursued diligently.

Guda also called for peaceful coexistence between communities and warned against mob justice, reminding the public that only security agencies have the authority to enforce the law.

Investigations into the incident are still ongoing.
