Local community leaders told journalists via telephone that many miners were still inside the collapsed pits when the disaster struck.

Those injured were rushed to Maru General Hospital for treatment, while emergency officials and local volunteers battled through the night in a desperate effort to rescue survivors.

The scale of casualties remains unclear as the fragile mining sites, weakened by persistent rainfall, gave way without warning, leaving families and rescuers anxious over the fate of those still trapped underground.
