A devastating windstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall has claimed four lives and destroyed 1,637 mud houses across Yobe State since May 9, according to the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA).

Dr. Muhammad Goje, Executive Secretary of YOSEMA, disclosed this to journalists on Thursday in Damaturu. He said the disaster affected seven local government areas: Bursari, Damaturu, Fika, Fune, Gulani, Potiskum, and Tarmuwa.

Goje revealed that 92 people sustained various degrees of injuries, while a total of 5,022 individuals across 1,264 households were affected by the storm.

He added that 83 households, made up of 368 individuals, were displaced by the disaster, with a total of 48 communities impacted. He identified Fika as the worst-hit area.

“In response to the disaster, YOSEMA, in partnership with Action Against Hunger (ACF) and with support from the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO), distributed life-saving relief materials to 566 households in Fika and Potiskum,” Goje said.

He explained that a joint needs assessment by SEMA and ACF was carried out to identify the most vulnerable families—those who had lost their homes, essential belongings, and were in urgent need of hygiene services.

He also noted that ACF’s WASH Project Manager, Mohammed Kingimi, had assured the victims of continued support.

“ACF is also preparing to roll out Food Security and Livelihood (FSL) support for the same 566 households to enhance their recovery,” Goje quoted Kingimi as saying.

Goje reaffirmed the Yobe State government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable communities through proactive emergency response systems.

“We remain committed to protecting our communities through swift and coordinated disaster response,” he stated.
