  • A court will try Flamengo’s Bruno Henrique for allegedly aiding family bets with a yellow card.

  • He and his brother must appear in court.

  • The case fuels Brazil’s growing match-fixing scandal.

A court in Brazil has just ordered striker Bruno Henrique to stand trial on the premise that he fixed a 2023 league match by deliberately incurring a yellow card to aid his family in betting.

On the day before the November fixture, family members set up some betting accounts and placed wagers that Henrique would be booked.

Calling it “criminal conduct,” the judge ordered that the two brothers must come to court within ten days.

His Rio house and the Flamengo training center were subject to searches on 24 November 2024 by the officers.

Henrique actually dismissed the investigation and continued playing, having played in the Club World Cup in the US last June and seeing Flamengo through against Red Bull Bragantino thereafter.

In Brazil, match-fixing is seen as a very serious offense punishable with two – six years of imprisonment.

The Bruno Henrique match-fixing scandal comes atop a larger scandal rattling Brazil’s first division and motivating Congress to set up a special commission to curb corruption and the influence of online gambling.

The Bruno Henrique match-fixing trial highlights renewed concerns over the integrity of Brazilian football and the expanding influence of betting schemes on the game.
