Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has disclosed that the rejection of the 2023 presidential election results by some Christians left her feeling fearful, betrayed, and isolated in the tense weeks before her husband’s inauguration as President.

In her newly released 52-page memoir, The Journey of Grace: Giving Thanks in All Things, published to mark her 65th birthday, Mrs Tinubu admitted she questioned her capacity to serve as First Lady of a country of more than 240 million people.

“I Felt Alone, Weeping Behind Closed Doors”

Reflecting on the aftermath of the elections, Mrs Tinubu wrote: “Despite the victory, I felt alone, weeping behind closed doors and wondering why I was betrayed by some of those I considered friends and spiritual family, many of whom I had opened up my home and my family to.”

She described how the refusal of sections of the Christian community to accept her husband’s victory shook her faith. “For days, I isolated, pondering on my ability to play the supportive and complementary role without messing up,” she recounted.

Rift in Church Community

Mrs Tinubu revealed that her church, the Redeemed Christian Church of God, was divided over the Muslim-Muslim ticket that produced her husband as president. “My being a Christian did not matter. My local Assembly was split,” she wrote.

She recalled similar rejection during her 2011 Senate campaign when her posters were rebuffed by church members.

The First Lady admitted to moments of self-pity but credited her spiritual mentors for reminding her of God’s promises. “Somewhere along the way, I forgot because the drowning voices of some naysayers clouded my reasoning. Until I was reminded of all God has spoken over my life,” she noted.

Despite her struggles, she said she focused on preparing for her husband’s swearing-in and the launch of her Renewed Hope Initiative, targeting agriculture, education, health, economic empowerment, and social investment.

She also revealed personal details about her inauguration attire, explaining herllllll preference for traditional fabrics. “Most of the ones made were not what I wanted. I wanted a traditional fabric worn by royalty in the day (Alari or Etu),” she wrote.
