Presidency warns against “malicious lies” targeting the country
Presidential spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, has issued a sharp rebuttal to United States Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, warning him against spreading what he described as malicious fabrications about alleged killings of Christians in Nigeria.
Senator Cruz, in a post on X, accused Nigerian officials of ignoring and facilitating “mass murder of Christians by Islamist jihadists.” He further disclosed that his proposed Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act would impose sanctions on Nigerian officials deemed complicit in the alleged persecution.

“It’s time to hold those responsible accountable,” the US lawmaker declared.
Presidency Pushes Back
In a direct response, Mr Onanuga dismissed Cruz’s remarks as false and damaging.
“Senator, stop these malicious, contrived lies against my country. We do not have a religious war in my country,” Onanuga wrote.

He emphasised that terrorist and criminal groups target all Nigerians regardless of religion.
“The degraded Boko Haram terrorists operating on the fringes of Nigeria’s North East target everyone. They attack farmers, our soldiers. The bandits in the North West kill worshippers in their mosques. Christians are not targeted. We have religious harmony in our country. Stop these malicious lies,” he stated.
