Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed reports suggesting that the emerging opposition coalition is centred on individual ambitions, insisting that the alliance is about saving Nigeria’s democracy, not securing power for any specific politician.
Atiku made the clarification while addressing speculations that he, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir El-Rufai were jostling for the 2027 presidential ticket under the newly formed coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
According to Atiku, the purpose of the alliance is to counter the alleged authoritarian tendencies of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and defend the sanctity of Nigeria’s electoral system.

“This is not an anti-Tinubu project; it is a pro-Nigerian movement. Nigerians must be the ultimate beneficiaries of this effort,” he stated.

He emphasised that the coalition was born out of a shared concern about the country’s democratic future.
“This initiative is driven by the need to safeguard our democracy from manipulation and abuse. It is about Nigeria, not personalities,” Atiku added.
He stressed that the alliance was not formed to advance the ambitions of political gladiators, but to restore public confidence in democratic governance.
