The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Johnson Adenola, has directed a thorough investigation into the death of a 14-year-old student, Kehinde Alade, who was fatally struck by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a police officer.
According to a report by The PUNCH, the teenager was en route to his examination centre to sit for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) when the incident occurred in Ibadan.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, on Tuesday, the CP revealed that the investigation will be overseen by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department.

“The command regrets to inform the general public of a tragic incident that occurred during a joint traffic enforcement operation with the state Traffic Management Authority which led to the unfortunate death of a 14-year-old male, Kehinde Alade,” the statement read.
The incident reportedly happened at about 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at the Airport Roundabout along the Alakia-Adelubi/Airport Road in Egbeda Local Government Area.
Osifeso explained that the victim’s father, identified as Odunayo Alade, was driving a black Honda Accord with Lagos registration number FST 639 JJ and was allegedly caught driving against traffic. He was said to have refused to obey the officers’ orders to stop.
“Rather than complying with lawful directives, the driver allegedly accelerated towards the enforcement team in an attempt to evade arrest, ramming into two OYTMA vehicles and a Police Buffalo Patrol truck,” Osifeso noted.
To prevent further danger, officers erected barricades to stop the vehicle. However, the driver reportedly broke through them and continued driving recklessly, raising suspicions among officers that he might be involved in a criminal act or possibly an abduction attempt.
As the chase continued, a police corporal fired a shot at the vehicle’s tyres to bring it to a halt. Tragically, the bullet missed and struck Kehinde, who was seated behind the driver. He was rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH) but was confirmed dead on arrival.
The CP confirmed that the officer who discharged the firearm has been arrested and, along with other team members involved in the operation, is currently undergoing investigation.
Adenola stated that the student’s remains have been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary for autopsy. He also extended his condolences to the grieving family, assuring that justice would be pursued in the matter.
