A tragic incident unfolded in Jigawa State on Saturday evening as eight girls lost their lives when a canoe carrying 15 children capsized while crossing the Zangwan Maje river in Taura Local Government Area.
The accident occurred around 8:15 p.m. as the children attempted to travel from Zangwan Maje to Jijin Gunka. According to local sources, the canoe was hit by strong winds and overwhelmed by fast-moving floodwaters, causing it to overturn mid-river.

“Fifteen children were on board the canoe when it capsized. Seven were rescued alive, while the bodies of the eight others, all females, were later recovered and handed over to their families,” one source confirmed.
The community, along with local divers, launched an immediate rescue operation that led to the survival of some and the recovery of the deceased.
Authorities have since warned residents to avoid crossing swollen rivers, especially during the rainy season. They also urged the use of life jackets and safer transport alternatives to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
NSCDC Arrests Two, Recovers Stolen Railway Tracks in Bauchi
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Bauchi State Command, has arrested two suspects and recovered a vehicle loaded with vandalized railway tracks in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area.
Spokesperson for the command, Saminu Yusuf, confirmed the development in a statement released on Sunday. He said the arrest was made on Tuesday after operatives acted on a tip-off from members of the public.
