Togolese international Samuel Asamoah suffered a shocking injury during a China League One match after crashing head-first into a pitch side advertising board.

The 31 year old midfielder, who plays for Guangxi Pingguo FC, was reportedly pushed by an opponent while battling for the ball, sending him forcefully into the LED panel.

His club confirmed on Monday that Asamoah suffered neck fractures and nerve damage and had undergone immediate surgery. “He is at risk of high-level paraplegia and will miss all remaining games this season. His career may also be seriously affected,” the club said in a statement.

In a follow-up update released on Wednesday, Guangxi Pingguo FC announced that Asamoah was recovering from surgery and in stable condition. “Guangxi Pingguo FC sincerely thanks all fans and all walks of life for their concern and support for Samuel Asamoah,” the club wrote, promising to provide updates after further medical examinations.

Before moving to China last year, Asamoah built a successful career in Belgium, playing for clubs such as Sint-Truiden and OH Leuven. He has represented Togo six times at the international level, according to football data site Transfermarkt.

The Chinese outlet The Paper, citing football authorities, reported that the advertising board involved in the incident was installed three metres from the field, aligning with international standards. The player who pushed Asamoah, Zhang Zhixiong of Chongqing Tonglianglong, received a yellow card for the foul.

Fans and football bodies across the world have sent their best wishes to Asamoah, who remains under close medical observation. His recovery progress will determine whether he can make a return to football in the future
