Popular gospel singer Tim Godfrey has condemned the poor treatment of gospel artistes in Nigeria, narrating how he once received bars of yam and a live chicken as payment for his work.

The award-winning artist expressed his disappointment in a video that went viral on Thursday, stating that returning to Nigeria was difficult for him because of how event organisers and audiences undervalue gospel musicians.

“Coming to Nigeria became difficult because of how artists are treated so badly,” Godfrey said. “All those stories about why gospel singers charge or collect money made me so angry. I once got two bars of yam and a live chicken as payment. How am I supposed to pay my bills or school fees with that? It’s unfair.”

His comments have generated widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians agreeing that gospel musicians deserve better recognition and financial appreciation for their performances.

Born in Kaduna State, Tim Godfrey started his music career in the early 2000s and gained fame after forming the group Tim Godfrey and the Xtreme Crew in 2004. Their hit single Na You Be God brought him national recognition and established him as one of Nigeria’s leading gospel acts.
