Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno has banned Channels Television from the Government House Press Centre.
-
This was due to the station’s broadcast of a video in which he confirmed plans to defect from the PDP to the APC.
Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has barred Channels Television from accessing the Government House Press Centre in Uyo after the station aired a video clip in which he openly confirmed his intention to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The broadcast, which aired on Friday, reportedly embarrassed the governor and triggered swift repercussions.
Following the airing, Governor Eno’s spokesperson, Mr. Ekerete Udoh, summoned the Channels TV crew and informed them that the governor had barred them from the press centre.

A source within the Government House revealed, “The governor was so furious, he wanted to sack Ekerete and disband the entire press corps.” The ban affects Channels TV’s long-serving correspondent Christopher Moffat and cameraman Kufre Ikpe.

Governor Eno made it clear during a meeting with the State Executive Council that any cabinet member unwilling to follow him in defecting to the APC should prepare to resign.
“You can’t be in my cabinet and play anti-party. It is what it is,” he said. The governor cited ongoing internal disputes within the PDP as the key reason for his decision to switch parties. His official defection is expected to take place in early June.
