  • Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has confirmed he will contest the 2027 general election under the Labour Party platform.

  • Obi attributed ongoing crises in the Labour Party and PDP to government interference, stressing the need for a strong opposition and promising reforms if given the chance.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has assured his supporters that he will once again contest the 2027 general election on the LP platform.

Obi made the commitment during an interaction with a group of young supporters in a video that circulated on the party’s WhatsApp platform.

Addressing questions about the apparent internal crisis within both the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obi explained, “What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government, quote me anywhere.”

Obi also encouraged Nigerians, especially youths, to take responsibility for ensuring their votes count, emphasizing that while parties may pay agents to monitor votes, ultimately it is the voters’ vigilance that matters.

He appealed for perseverance despite resistance from those benefiting from the old system and stated his support for instituting a retirement age for politicians.

“By the time the 2027 election holds, I would be 65 years old, and I would not want to be contesting for elections in my 70s,” Obi added.
