Officers of the Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone B, have intercepted a truck carrying 250 bags of smuggled foreign rice cleverly concealed inside a modified tanker.

The vehicle was stopped on August 3, 2025, along the Yauri–Kontagora Road in Kebbi State and was later moved to Kaduna for thorough inspection. Upon examination, the rice—valued at ₦20.51 million—was discovered and promptly seized.

Zonal Controller, Comptroller AM Alkali, commended the officers involved for their intelligence, vigilance, and professionalism. He reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to curbing smuggling activities and safeguarding Nigeria’s local industries.

“This seizure reflects the high level of innovation and dedication of our officers in tackling smuggling. We remain committed to protecting the nation’s economy and public health,” Comptroller Alkali stated.

In a related operation conducted on July 17, customs officers also confiscated a large cache of unregistered drugs and hazardous chemicals. The seized items included 58,740 sachets of unregistered medicaments and 27 cartons of Analgin injection, which were handed over to the State Director of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Kaduna.

Additionally, three sacks containing 990 units of Riodin chemical were handed over to the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).

Calling for public support in the ongoing efforts, Comptroller Alkali said:

“The fight against smuggling and unsafe products is a duty we all share.”
