The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Mr Peter Obi, has fired back at the Minister of Works, Engr David Umahi, over his recent statement that it is “not yet the turn of the South-East” to produce Nigeria’s president in 2027.

In a sharp reaction on Sunday, Obi said Umahi had no authority to determine the political future of an entire region. He stressed that only Nigerian voters hold the power to decide who leads the country.

According to him, “No politician should assume the right to speak for the conscience of millions. Leadership in a democracy is not handed out by regions or titles; it is determined by the will of the people.”

The former Anambra State governor urged politicians to focus on solving national challenges instead of promoting sentiments that divide the electorate.

He maintained that true democracy flourishes when citizens—not political elites—determine their leaders through transparent elections.
