Edun to miss IMF/World Bank meetings as CBN governor leads delegation
The Presidency has debunked claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is planning to replace the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, following reports of his sudden illness.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Presidency confirmed that the minister is recuperating in his Abuja residence after taking ill last week. It clarified that he neither suffered a stroke nor was flown abroad for treatment.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, explained that the minister was receiving adequate medical care within the country.
“Yes, he’s indisposed. Wale Edun is about 69 years old. He suddenly fell ill. As we are talking, he is in Nigeria. He is recuperating. He’s around,” Onanuga said.

The clarification came after speculation surfaced online suggesting that President Tinubu was considering a cabinet reshuffle over Edun’s health condition.
Earlier, the Presidency had announced that Edun would not be attending this year’s World Bank and International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C. It stated that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Olayemi Cardoso, would lead the Nigerian delegation in his place.
The meetings, scheduled to commence on Monday, October 14, bring together global finance ministers, central bank governors, and economic policy experts.
Appointed on August 28, 2023, as the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Edun has been instrumental in implementing President Tinubu’s fiscal reforms aimed at stabilising the naira, curbing inflation, and boosting foreign investment.
