  • TCN says over N88bn used to fix power infrastructure destroyed by vandals since 2021

  • Repairs caused delays of up to four months in power supply restoration

  • Communities, security agencies urged to help safeguard facilities

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has disclosed that the Federal Government has spent more than N88 billion repairing power infrastructure damaged by vandals between 2021 and now.

TCN’s Principal Manager (Lines) for Lagos Region, Mr Seyi Onabajo, revealed this during a one-day sensitisation programme at the Odogunyan 132 kilovolt transmission substation in Ikorodu, Lagos.

Mr Onabajo said the huge expenditure on repairs is hampering efforts to achieve uninterrupted power supply nationwide, stressing that vandalism is a deliberate act carried out for selfish reasons.

He urged community members to support TCN in protecting facilities.

On the wider implications, TCN’s General Manager in Lagos, Mr Mojeed Akintola, noted that the downtime after an attack could last up to four months. He cited the case of ten towers vandalised in Abeokuta, which took three months to restore, with TCN spending N1 million daily on that project.

Mr Akintola appealed to the public, security agencies and steel companies to collaborate with TCN in curbing the menace of vandalism affecting the nation’s power sector.
