  • Governor Peter Mbah says joining the APC is to better serve the people of Enugu State, not a betrayal of the PDP.
  • He explained that the PDP platform could no longer meet the needs of the people effectively.
  • Mbah insists his loyalty is to the people, not any political party structure.
  • His move follows similar defections by other governors, including those of Delta and Akwa Ibom States.

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has defended his decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the move was driven by the need to better serve the interests of the people of the state.

Speaking during a state-wide broadcast to the people of Enugu and later to journalists, Mbah dismissed claims that his defection was an act of betrayal to the PDP, the party under which he was elected.

“This is not a betrayal; it is not abandonment either,” Mbah said. “It is about carrying the people’s mandate on a platform that can best serve their interests. My loyalty has always been to the people who entrusted me with their votes.”

He explained that after careful evaluation, it became clear that the PDP platform was no longer capable of delivering on the expectations of the people, prompting the decision to migrate to a stronger political base.

“We have seen that the platform on which that mandate was given may not serve us optimally,” the governor added. “So, after consultations, we decided to move to a platform that will allow us to serve better.”

When asked if he owed PDP supporters an apology, the governor maintained that his focus remained on the development of Enugu State rather than on partisan politics.

“If this move was about self-interest, then it would require an apology,” Mbah said. “But it is about continuity of progress and putting the people first before the party.”

His defection marks another major shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, as reports indicate that Bayelsa State Governor Duoye Diri may soon follow suit. Earlier in the year, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, along with their officials, had also joined the APC.

Governor Mbah’s move is seen by analysts as a significant boost to the ruling party’s influence in the South-East, potentially reshaping regional political alliances ahead of future elections.
