President Bola Tinubu has extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Super Eagles following their emphatic 4–0 win over the Cheetahs of Benin Republic, describing the result as a major step in Nigeria’s quest for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a statement released on Tuesday by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended the team for their fighting spirit and unity on the pitch, noting that their victory has reignited hope among millions of football-loving Nigerians.
“While the job is not yet complete, I join millions of Nigerian football fans in wishing our team every success in the playoffs,” the President said. “The mood across the country reflects a shared belief that Nigeria deserves a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.”
Tinubu further assured the Super Eagles and the coaching staff that the Federal Government would continue to provide full support as they aim to book their spot in the prestigious tournament.
“As your President, I assure you and the coaching crew of the Federal Government’s support as you strive to secure your place at the tournament. Nigerians everywhere believe in you, and I do too. We look forward to seeing you fly our flag proudly on the world stage,” Tinubu added.

With the group stage now complete, the Super Eagles have advanced to the CAF playoffs, joining the three best second-placed teams from the nine qualifying groups. The playoff format will feature a semifinal and final round, with the winners advancing to the FIFA inter-confederation playoff for a possible tenth African slot at the World Cup
