  • Several PDP governors, including Fubara, Alex Otti, and Diri, are reportedly in talks to defect to the APC ahead of 2027.

  • The move follows a wave of defections that has strengthened President Tinubu’s political dominance.

  • Opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, have condemned the trend as “acts of political desperation.”

Several governors elected on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform, Fubara, Alex Otti, and Diri are reportedly preparing to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Those said to be involved include Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, and Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, alongside Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, and Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas.

According to sources within the ruling party, the mass defection is part of President Bola Tinubu’s strategic consolidation of power across the southern and northern regions.

A senior APC official told Naija News that discussions with multiple PDP governors were ongoing.

“The APC is attracting them all. I am aware that discussions are ongoing with other PDP governors from the South. Soon, the governors of Abia, Rivers, and even Diri, who just resigned from the PDP, will join the APC,” the source said.

The insider added that the plan was to weaken the PDP’s influence ahead of the next election cycle.

“This development is not limited to the South, as some governors from the North, particularly the North Central and North East, are already finalising talks to join the ruling party,” the source added.

The development follows a spate of defections in recent days, including that of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, who left the PDP for the APC along with his cabinet members.

Similarly, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State announced his resignation from the PDP on Wednesday, alongside the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Abraham Ingobere, and 21 lawmakers.

However, opposition leaders have condemned the wave of defections.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi described the moves as “acts of desperation by politicians seeking personal survival.”

Political observers warn that the ongoing defections could push Nigeria towards a one-party state, raising concerns about the future of democratic competition in the country.
