Panic gripped Government Secondary School, Namnai, in the Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State on Wednesday evening as an examination hall collapsed on students sitting for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The collapse occurred during a heavy downpour accompanied by a violent windstorm, leaving dozens of students, teachers, corps members, and exam supervisors trapped under the debris. Fortunately, local residents responded swiftly and rescued those affected.

Several students, both male and female, sustained various injuries—some reportedly suffering fractures. The injured are currently receiving treatment at a nearby Primary Healthcare Centre in the town.

According to a resident, Alhaji DanAzumi Lauris, the incident happened around 6pm just as the second batch of students had begun writing their exams. “The rain came suddenly with strong winds, and the old classroom structures couldn’t withstand it,” he told The PUNCH. He added that the storm also damaged several houses in the community.

Meanwhile, the same weather disturbance affected students in Jalingo, the state capital. Many candidates were stranded at their exam centres until after 1am as the heavy rain prevented them from returning home.

Additionally, delays in the delivery of examination papers forced some centres to begin the day’s paper as late as 8pm.

Efforts to reach the Taraba State Commissioner for Basic Education, Dr. Augustina Godwin, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report, as her phone line was unreachable.
