“His research was guided by his commitment to the progress made possible by science, his dedication to women’s freedom, and his desire to enable everyone to live better, longer lives,” his wife Simone Harari Baulieu said.
Despite facing intense criticism and threats from anti-abortion groups, Baulieu remained steadfast in his convictions. When Wyoming became the first US state to outlaw the abortion pill in 2023, Baulieu condemned the move as “scandalous.” At 96, he emphasized his dedication to “increasing the freedom of women.”

Baulieu’s legacy extends beyond his pioneering work on the abortion pill. He also made significant contributions to research on Alzheimer’s disease and severe depression.
French Equality Minister Aurore Berge praised Baulieu, saying he was “guided throughout his life by one requirement: human dignity.” Baulieu’s work will continue to impact women’s lives and scientific progress for generations to come.
