A powerful windstorm has left 209 households in ruins across Fika Local Government Area of Yobe State, sparking concern among emergency response agencies in the region.

This was revealed by the Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), Dr. Mohammed Goje, during a disaster preparedness meeting held in Damaturu.

The event was part of a wider campaign organized by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to boost readiness against climate-related emergencies.

Dr. Goje noted that the storm incident, which took place in 2025, caused widespread damage not only to homes but also to several public buildings. He added that the agency is currently assessing the situation to determine appropriate support for the victims.

Updated figures from YOSEMA show that climate disasters have been a recurring challenge in the state. In 2024 alone, windstorms and floods affected nearly 29,000 households, impacting over 68,000 individuals. Tragically, these events led to 47 deaths and injuries to more than 500 people due to collapsed structures in 601 communities across Yobe’s 17 local government areas.

Speaking at the stakeholders’ session, NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar—represented by North East Zonal Director Yakubu Suleiman—highlighted the urgency of early intervention. She referenced recent weather predictions by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) and flood forecasts by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) as reasons for heightened concern.

The ongoing campaign, titled “Strengthening Resilience, Enhancing Preparedness and Response,” aims to decentralize disaster risk management by focusing on vulnerable grassroots communities, with the goal of saving lives and promoting rapid recovery during emergencies.
