  • The development comes after Kanu lost his no-case submission in the ongoing terrorism charges against him

In a dramatic courtroom development on Thursday, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), dismissed his legal team, including his lead counsel and former Attorney General of the Federation, Godwin Kanu Agabi SAN.

The IPOB leader made the move shortly after being escorted into the courtroom by Department of State Services (DSS) operatives.

After exchanging brief pleasantries with Agabi, Kanu indicated that he no longer required their services, prompting the Senior Advocates of Nigeria to withdraw from the trial.

The trial judge, James Omotosho, sought to assign him new counsel, but Kanu declined, insisting on self-representation. During the proceedings, he repeatedly argued that the court lacked jurisdiction to try him.

Kanu is now set to open his defence in the terrorism charges brought by the federal government, following the earlier dismissal of his no-case submission.

The courtroom was left tense as the federal prosecution prepares to face a defendant representing himself in a high-profile and politically sensitive trial.
