President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians to rally behind the federal government’s ongoing reforms aimed at building a more reliable and people-centered healthcare system.
Speaking through the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, during the official transfer of the Akure complex of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) to the Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital (FUTATH), Tinubu emphasized that his administration is determined to improve healthcare delivery in partnership with state governments.

The Akure complex is one of three teaching hospital facilities under UNIMEDTH. Following the transfer, UNIMEDTH will continue to operate the remaining two complexes located at the Medical Village, Laje Road, and Hospital Road in Ondo City.
Tinubu said the newly established FUTA Teaching Hospital will play a transformative role in healthcare delivery, research, and medical training, not just in Ondo State but across Nigeria.
“I want to thank the governor and his team for the amazing collaboration that brought us here today. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is fully committed to transforming the health and social landscape of this nation, with boldness and determination,” Pate said.
The minister assured healthcare workers joining the new federal institution of better opportunities and support, urging them to dedicate themselves to service and humanity.
He also expressed appreciation to elder statesman Pa Reuben Fasoranti and the Deji of Akure, Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo, for their roles in achieving this milestone.
During the handover ceremony in Akure, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Olayide Adelami, said the transfer was a strategic decision to strengthen medical education and research.
According to him, the move would open doors to superior funding, modern equipment, and expanded collaboration with both national and international research institutions.
“The decision to hand over this hospital is a deliberate step towards providing world-class healthcare for our people,” he said. “With the Federal Government’s involvement, we anticipate better infrastructure, expert staffing, and groundbreaking medical research that will redefine healthcare delivery in Nigeria.”

The Chief Medical Director of FUTATH, Professor Olusegun Ojo, noted that the facility would specialize in advanced diagnostics and sub-specialist care. He said the hospital would help reduce the financial and emotional burdens of medical tourism by offering quality services locally.
He added that the hospital’s focus on timely care would significantly reduce mortality and improve access to specialized treatment for Nigerians.
