Eyewitnesses said the driver, upon realising what had happened, quickly fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle. “There were two boys in their school uniforms. They had just closed from school. The first boy crossed safely, but his friend was hit by the Sienna that lost control,” one of the witnesses recounted.
The witness added that the impact was so severe that the vehicle climbed over the road median before crushing the child. “When I ran to the scene, the boy was lying in a pool of blood, and his books were scattered everywhere. It was a very painful sight,” he said.
Moments later, the boy’s distraught parents arrived and took his remains away amid cries and anguish. The mother was inconsolable, as sympathisers surrounded her in tears.

A police officer in mufti later arrived with a tow truck and took the abandoned Sienna to the Oke-Baale Police Division. Reports later confirmed that the driver turned himself in at the station and was detained for investigation.
Residents of the area have since called on authorities to install speed bumps and pedestrian crossings near schools to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
